While not without controversy, the 2016 Academy Awards show was a hit with those of us who tuned in largely for the red carpet coverage. First of all, there was simply more of it than ever before; in fact, the pre-show analysis of fashions and jewels on E! ran longer than ABC’s awards presentation itself.
As for star power, that too was at an all-time high. More It-Girls wore more dazzling jewels by more big-name designers than we have witnessed in years. Here are OBJ’s big winners in the category of Jewelry at the 2016 Academy Awards.
Mad Max: Fury Road star Charlize Theron stunned in a drop-dead-red Christian Dior gown with a plunging neckline down to there. And just in case your eye didn’t go there automatically, a 48-carat diamond and platinum cluster pendant by Harry Winston pointed the way.
Matching 15.49-carat cluster diamond earrings and an 8.78-carat cushion-cut diamond ring, all set in platinum, were Theron’s for the night…compliments of Mr. Winston. This was Old Hollywood glamour at its very best…Charlize is a perennial winner in OBJ’s book.
A deeply V’d gold snakeskin gown by Tom Ford had many pundits comparing presenter Margot Robbie to the Oscar statuette itself. Diamonds by Forevermark® added just the right amount of icy contrast.
Robbie wore 18K white gold hoop earrings featuring 8.59 carats of diamonds, a 3-carat diamond eternity band set in 18K gold, and a pear-shaped 6.21-carat Fancy Yellow diamond ring set in 18-karat white gold. Wow.
In a nod to her Irish heritage, Brooklyn leading lady Saoirse Ronan chose a custom Calvin Klein sheath of emerald green sequins. With it she wore one dangling earring of emeralds, jadeite and diamonds, and one of pearls and opals, both by Chopard. Ronan’s cheeky turnout, including the trendsetting mismatched earrings, gave new meaning to the phrase “the wearin’ of the green.”
Gaga has been alternating between costumes and couture at recent red carpet events. This time she mixed the best of both worlds, thanks to her longtime stylist-turned-designer Brandon Maxwell.
Maxwell’s strapless white jumpsuit-with-skirt was sculptural, chic, and a touch androgynous. Gaga added the perfect accessories to the dramatic ensemble: massive diamond drop earrings by Lorraine Schwartz – 90 carats worth!
