The Spring 2016 collections at Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, and Marc Jacobs were sparkling with jeweled hair accessories — including ornamented headbands, combs, barrettes and even tiaras. Why not be an early adapter and rock this trend during the holidays? Almost any jewel that can be worn on your neck, wrist, ears or collar will work in your hair as well. All it takes is a little jewelry ingenuity! Here are five tips for revving up your tresses for the party season ahead.
Bejeweled Bobby Pins
The lowly bobby pin has been transformed with rhinestones, pearls, crystals and beads. Look for bejeweled bobby pins and hair pins at major drug and accessories chains, and always buy a few more than you think you will need.
If you’re using the jeweled pins to secure an up-do, make an X with three or more for maximum hold. They’re also a party-perfect way to punctuate side-swept bangs, or to anchor those messy buns that are so popular right now on the red carpet.
Comb the Craft Stores
Jeweled hair combs are expensive in the department stores, but you can make your own with a hot-glue gun. Buy tortoise shell, gold- or silver-tone plastic combs at the drugstore, and decorate with crystals, pearls and faux jewels from Michael’s or Hobby Lobby.
Trendsetting milliner Gigi Burris told The New York Times: “Always put the teeth of the comb toward the face. This creates tension against the comb and the hair to keep the piece securely in place.”
Try a Tiara
We’ve said it before here at OBJ, tiaras are not just for royalty – or brides — anymore. But if you don’t think you can pull off the Kate Middleton look, try wearing a necklace or jeweled headband low on the forehead in Roaring ’20s fashion.
Any necklace or strand of pearls can be worn this way: just secure it in place with plain bobby pins and you’re good to go. (Look for more jeweled hair accessories from the 1920s when Downton Abbey returns to PBS on January 3, 2016.)
The Headband-and-Brooch Combo
Headbands are back, and they’ve taken on new star-power for holiday parties. Choose skinny or wide headbands in satin, velvet, silver or gold. Wear them as-is by day, and add a brooch or a pair of clip-on earrings for extra dazzle at night. You’ll be surprised at how a jewel or two in your hair can light up your entire face!
Go Matchy Matchy
Dolce & Gabbana started a trend last fall by matching ornate head pieces to their statement necklaces and earrings. Expensive? You bet, but you can pull off this designer look for less. Just purchase a costume jewelry suite – a faux jewel necklace with matching earrings and brooch — and wear one or more of the pieces in your hair.
