What’s the Difference Between White Sapphires and Diamonds? Both Symbolize Romance and Loyalty

We break down the differences when it comes to this sparkler showdown.

We all know diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and as dazzling as Swarovski crystals and CZs might be, diamonds are in a league of their own. There’s one gemstone, however, that comes close at first glance—white sapphires

Appearance

Diamonds and white sapphires often find themselves in the spotlight for their similar appearances, but they’re distinctly different gems with unique properties. Both diamonds and white sapphires offer a colorless, sparkling appearance. However, the brilliance and fire (the flashes of color you see in a diamond) of a diamond are unparalleled. Because of their chemical and molecular structure, diamonds refract light in a way that creates that signature sparkle.

White sapphires are beautiful and eye-catching. They reflect light, but with a softer shimmer than diamonds. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, considering styles like quiet luxury and minimalism are popular for embracing a less showstopping aesthetic. We love the White Sapphire brand Dorsey, created by Justin Bieber, which features white sapphires in many styles traditionally associated with diamonds, like bezel cut tennis bracelets and necklaces, as well as asscher cut earrings, and eternity rings. Of course as these are set with white sapphires in lieu of diamonds, the price point is much lower and more accessible to shoppers.

Hardness and Durability

When it comes to hardness, diamonds reign supreme. They top the Mohs Hardness Scale at a perfect 10, making them the hardest natural substance. This means they are incredibly resistant to scratches and damage, ideal for everyday wear. White sapphires, on the other hand, rank at a 9 on the Mohs scale. While still very durable, they are slightly more susceptible to scratches and abrasions over time compared to diamonds. This doesn’t mean white sapphires are fragile—in fact a 9 is a very durable score relative to other gemstones. They are perfectly suitable for jewelry, but they might require a bit more care.

Symbolism

Diamonds are traditionally associated with love, commitment, and strength; it’s no wonder they are the gemstone of choice when it comes to engagement rings. On the other hand, white sapphires are associated with purity, innocence, and loyalty. We can’t help but read this as a nod to his six year marriage to Hailey Bieber, who he recently shouted out as “the best woman I have and will ever know.” White sapphires definitely serve romance and deliver a polished, sophisticated jewelry look. We love this gemstone for a softer, more subtle sparkle, and those who are looking for a more accessible price point.
