We investigate the science behind colorful diamonds, and how to keep these precious jewels sparkling.
Dopamine dressing isn’t reserved for garments. Your jewelry wardrobe can be provide hits of dopamine, especially with the extraordinary sparkle of colorful diamonds. When you catch the flash of a canary yellow diamond or see the sublime sparkle of a blue diamond, you can feel a physiological shift. In the world of gemstones, we often talk about 4Cs and carats, but we rarely talk about the dopamine hit that diamonds bring, especially colorful ones. But here’s the thing, only one in 10,000 diamonds mined is colorful enough to be designated a colorful diamond by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). That means these diamonds are incredibly rare, and extravagantly priced. We love them as the ultimate inspiration.
The vibe: "fruit salad" motifs with sharp, geometric carves that feel like a party you can wear. But why are we so drawn to color right now?
The Science of the Sparkle
The science behind colored diamonds is a testament to nature’s beautiful accidents. While a perfect diamond is pure carbon and colorless, colored diamonds are the result of trace elements or extreme structural pressure. GIA uses a gradient of hue to determine the value of the stone—the deeper the color, the more rare, and valuable the diamond.

Yellow Diamonds
Yellow diamonds get their sunny disposition from nitrogen atoms trapped inside the crystal lattice. Yellow diamonds were most commonly mined in Ellendale, Australia, however mining has ceased, making those that already exist very rare.

Blue Diamonds
Blue diamonds owe their cool depths to boron. There is only one place in the world to mine blue diamonds, The Cullinan Mine in South Africa.

Pink Diamonds
Pink diamonds are the result of beautiful distortion in their crystal structure, or when the earth literally twists the stone’s structure until it reflects light differently. Rio Tinto’s Argyle Mine in Western Australia was the last place in the world to mine pink diamonds, and it shuttered in 2020. Pink diamonds, especially those with a rich hue are some of the world’s more rare and valuable stones. They are the most coveted colored diamonds and have been for centuries.
When we see these saturated hues, our brains register them as high-vibrational energy. Color therapy suggests that vibrant stones can trigger an immediate sense of play and lightheartedness. It’s why an emerald-cut yellow diamond feels like a shot of adrenaline compared to the quiet elegance of a clear stone. We’re also taking in one of earth’s most rare and precious creations. If you’re in the possession of one, lucky you!
