Tourmaline occurs in the widest array of colors of any gemstone species. It is also known for exhibiting many colors in one gemstone. These bi or tri-color gems are formed in many combinations and are highly prized. Tourmalines may be heat treated to improve their color. Stones that have been treated could fade if exposed to heat or bright light. Tourmalines are a fairly hard stone rating 7-7.5 on the Moh’s hardness scale. However, care should still be taken to protect form scratches or sharp blows.
