Moonstone, one of the three birthstones for June, ranks 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness. As such, it can be scratched easily by other harder substances. Because moonstone is not a particularly tough stone, special care should be taken against bumps and sharp blows. Regular, careful cleaning will help maintain moonstone’s singular beauty.

Dazzling Moonstones

The best way to clean your moonstone jewelry is to use Connoisseurs Dazzle Drops Advanced Jewelry Cleaner. Let your jewelry soak for 30 seconds to one minute and agitate up and down occasionally using the dipping scoop. Use the soft brush if necessary to get between prongs and under the setting. Rinse in lukewarm water and dry with a lint-free cloth.

You can also use Connoisseurs Delicate Jewelry Cleaner in the familiar red jar.

A Note About Silver

If your moonstone is set in silver we recommend Connoisseurs Dazzle Drops Silver Jewelry Cleaner. Drop a small amount of the cleaner on your jewelry. Use the soft brush to clean between prongs and under the setting. Rinse with lukewarm water and dry with a lint-free cloth.

Do not use Connoisseurs Silver Jewelry Cleaner Liquid Dip Cleaner.

Do not clean with steam cleaners or Ultrasonic machines.

More About Moonstone

According to the American Gem Society, moonstone was named by the Roman natural historian Pliny, who wrote that moonstone’s shimmery appearance shifted with the phases of the moon.

The AGS tells us that the most common moonstone comes from the mineral adularia, named for an early mining site near Mt. Adular in Switzerland that supplied this gem. This site also gave rise to the term “adularescence,” which refers to the stone’s milky glow, like moonlight floating on water.

As its name implies, moonstone evokes lunar mystery and magic. Its calming energies are said to be able to balance natural biological rhythms. It is believed by many that moonstone acts as a fertility crystal by sparking passion in new lovers and reuniting old ones!

Known as the Traveler’s Stone, moonstone is also believed to protect travelers at night.

Moonstone is used by some people to treat insomnia and sleepwalking, encourage sound sleep and create beneficial dreams.
