What’s Your Jewelry Sign? Zodiac-Inspired Pieces We Love

While many people collect jewelry featuring their birthstone, many also seek out pieces that celebrate their zodiac sign. From simple charms on chains to elaborately bejeweled statement pieces by Chanel, wearing your astrological sign can be just that—a personal statement about your unique jewelry style.

Some zodiac jewels are easier to collect than others. My sign, for instance, is Gemini, the twins, but try as I might I have not been able to find a piece that speaks to me. Those lucky enough to fall under the signs of Leo (the lion), Taurus (the bull) or Aries (the ram), however, have a veritable menagerie of new and vintage jewelry styles from which to choose. Here are a few worth noting:

You don’t have to be a Leo to appreciate Chanel’s high jewelry collection entitled “Sous le Signe du Lion” (Under the Sign of the Lion). Introduced last summer at Fashion Week in Paris, this exquisite collection features 58 jewels celebrating Mademoiselle Chanel’s sign – she was born a Leo on August 19, 1883. Throughout her life Coco Chanel collected lion statuary and objets d’art which she used to decorate the fabulous flat she kept above her couture salon at 31 Rue Cambon in Paris. Today, the House of Chanel celebrates the lion in medallion necklaces, oversized brooches and over-the-top rings in crystal, diamonds, platinum and 18-karat gold. The “Sous le Signe du Lion” collection includes the first jewels produced in Chanel’s own high jewelry ateliers, which opened last year, and it’s safe to say the lion will figure in Chanel collections for years to come.

For all you Aries folks out there, the ram’s head is a popular motif that dates back to ancient jewelry. The ram is often featured in museum jewelry collections, where attractive reproduction pieces can be found at very affordable price points.

On the other hand, a coral, gold and multi-gem ram’s head brooch signed by David Webb sold at Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction last year for $16,250! You can often find the designer’s animal bracelets and brooches at auction, and on websites such as 1stdibs and eBay.
