Until recently, whenever I mentioned jeweled butterflies to my colleagues, they would go running to their respective corners; it seems you either love ’em or hate ’em. I always thought I was in the second camp, but lately I have changed my mind. Like heart jewelry and shell jewelry, which have graduated from seasonal motifs to year-round must-haves, unique butterfly jewelry is now flying off the shelves and “collectibles” websites. Let’s take a look at some high-end and affordable examples.
Butterflies on Runways & Red Carpets
There’s no doubt about it, butterflies are a hot trend this season…in printed fabrics, silk scarves, hats, bags, and jewelry. I saw this classic motif over and over at the Fall 2018 Ready-to-Wear collections, the Schiaparelli Spring ’19 show, and at Bridal Fashion Week in New York.
Superstar Mariah Carey, who has just joined the cast of “The Voice,” has long worn a butterfly jewelry ring as her personal signature. Mariah’s butterflies (she owns more than one) are made of white and rose gold with exquisite diamonds. If you’re a fan of this red carpet style, I found a similar ring in cubic zirconia for only $33.75 at Macy’s.
Silver Butterfly Jewelry
One of the most affordable ways to adopt the butterfly trend is with sterling silver, which is making a big comeback this fall. Kay Jewelers carries a silver butterfly ring with real diamond accents, for only $84.99.
Gold Butterfly Jewelry
For unique 14K gold and gold-plated butterfly designs, head to collectibles websites 1stdibs and RubyLane. Here you can often find one-of-a-kind and “gently loved” vintage pieces.
When it comes to butterfly collecting, my personal favorite is the butterfly brooch, which I pin to a jacket lapel as if it has just landed there. Legend has it that if a butterfly alights on you, you are blessed with good luck—so I’m giving butterfly brooches to all my loved ones this holiday season!
Butterfly Jewelry on Amazon
It’s no surprise that Amazon has one on the most extensive and affordable selections of butterfly-themed fashion jewelry around. For years, the online giant’s jewelry business has been steadily growing, and now it has announced a new jewelry division with its own nameplate, coming soon.
The silvertone butterfly pendant above, with pale blue rhinestones, would make a wonderful gift for all the ladies on your holiday gift list. It’s only $22.99 at amazon.com.
While you’re shopping on Amazon, don’t forget to stock up on Connoisseurs Jewelry Cleaners, the #1 brand of jewelry fans, retailers, and jewelers alike. See this handy chart to learn which cleaners are best for every type of jewelry you own.
