When it comes to mid-winter vacation planning, the grass is always greener. Whether you’re digging out of the Midwest for a snorkeling holiday in Grand Caymen…or ditching the Snowbird traffic in Florida to go skiing in the Rockies…it’s what you don’t have that you crave on a winter break. Opposites attract.
The same holds true for your travel jewelry wardrobe. Think about where you’re going, not where you’ve been. If you usually wear gold, try packing just your silver jewelry. If you tend to be classic at home, think funky or exotic on vacation. Mix it up…think outside your jewelry box!
Destination as Inspiration
How about a trip to Scottsdale for some golf and a tour of legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West? (See: http://www.townandcountrymag.com/style/fashion-trends/frank-lloyd-wright-taliesin-west#slide-1)
Polish up your best sterling silver and turquoise pieces, or make a bold statement with sculptural and geometric styles. (And of course save room in your carry-on for the fabulous Southwest-chic jewelry you’ll find in the desert.) Planning a weekend in preppy Palm Beach? Think coral and aquamarine…pink and green. This is Lilly Pulitzer land, home of Jackie O-style sunglasses, scads of bangle bracelets, and jewelry with shells, turtles and starfish motifs. Be sure to check out the local thrift shops for vintage pieces and costume collectibles.
Most of us don’t wear too much jewelry on the slopes, but après ski is a great time to bring out the bling. Wear a big statement necklace on a cashmere turtleneck, or switch from your diamond studs to chandelier earrings once the sun goes down. After all, you’re on vacation…there’s no point in leaving your glamour at home.
A Word to the Jewelry Wise
Many of the wealthiest and most sophisticated travelers pack their “paste” instead of fine jewels when traveling abroad. And depending on where you’re staying, there may or may not be a safe in your hotel room. Try packing your best jewelry in a jewelry carry-all or organizer and stash it in your hand luggage during the plane ride (never check what you love). When you arrive, simply transfer your jewelry carry-all to a larger purse or beach bag and keep it with you when you leave your room. (Okay, we’re a little Obsessed by Jewelry, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.) Bon Voyage!
