They say the world is divided between dog people and cat people, but among fashion folk cats clearly rule. At least they did during Fashion Month, the four-week cavalcade of Fall 2016 collections just wrapping up after stops in New York, London, Milan and Paris.
Cat jewelry, cat fashions and cats as props in fashion shoots are all the rage. And we don’t mean big cats – as in leopard spots and tiger stripes. No, these are common household kitty-cats…an uncommon fashion trend if there ever was one.

The Cat’s Out of the Bag

From sweaters woven with cat motifs at Gucci to cat’s-head pendants at Loewe to cat emoji bracelets at Chanel, the feline craze has taken over the catwalk.
First spotted at Stella McCartney’s pre-Fall collection in L.A., it was chronicled in a fashion and jewelry portfolio in Vogue Paris. Next, it moved (on tiny cat’s feet) to Milan, where Gucci picked up the theme.
It all culminated in Paris, where Jonathan Anderson’s eclectic collection for Loewe featured life-size cat’s-head necklaces made of perspex resin.

Women’s Wear Daily said: “With this collection, Anderson proved that modernism and eccentricity make fine bedfellows. Among his quirky accessories was a white cat-shaped minaudière slung from a necklace.”
C is for Cat Jewelry…and Chanel
Does OBJ have a favorite cat? It would have to be the emoji-style bracelet seen at Chanel’s Fall 2016 collection in Paris. Shown with a leather and fringe outfit festooned with ropes of pearls, the cheeky little cuff is destined to become one of those double-C accessories that everyone who’s anyone collects.

Coco Chanel loved cats…as does Chanel Creative Director Karl Lagerfeld; or at least he loves one. Lagerfeld’s pet, Choupette, is so famous among the fashion set she has her own Twitter account: https://twitter.com/choupettesdiary.
The cat’s meow.
