How to Clean and Protect Your Jewelry All Summer

Summer can really do a number on your jewelry. Perspiration and body oils, sunscreen and insect repellant, saltwater and chlorine can dull or damage silver and gold. To keep your favorite pieces looking their best, try following these summertime jewelry care tips.

  1. Remove jewelry before swimming. Cold water causes your hands to shrink, increasing the likelihood of losing your rings. Salt water is corrosive and can erode soldered metal in jewelry settings. Pools and hot tubs use chlorine, which can damage silver, gold, and platinum, and cause some gemstones to discolor.
  2. Clean jewelry more often in the summer. Perspiration, body oils, and suntan lotions can build up to make your jewelry look dull. Use Connoisseurs Precious or Delicate jewelry cleaner often after outdoor activities. Perspiration is particularly hard on silver jewelry, so keep it clean with Connoisseurs Dazzle Drops Silver Jewelry Crème.
  3. Ask your jeweler. Sun and heat can cause some colored gemstones to fade; learn which stones are affected before exposing them to direct summer sun. On the other hand, you probably wear your engagement and wedding rings all the time, so keep a Diamond Dazzle Stik in your purse or beach bag for quick touch-ups on the go.
