Fans of high-end jewels enjoyed an embarrassment of riches this past week with back-to-back nights of TV coverage of the VMAs and Emmy Awards Red Carpet jewelry. MTV’s Video Music Awards on Sunday, August 24, and the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday, August 25, provided a study in contrasts — in more ways than one.

Less Was More

At the VMAs, where the focus was on body-revealing fashions and costumes, the stars seemed to go a little light on jewelry. A notable exception was the night’s reigning diva – Beyoncé. Queen Bey won OBJ’s “Best Earrings of the Night” award for her black and diamond chandelier stunners by Lorraine Schwartz. Later, Beyoncé’s bejeweled onesie helped her steal the show during her album-length performance.

The New Old Hollywood

Jewelry at the Emmy Awards included an abundance of diamonds, especially drop earrings, several spectacular ear climbers, and beautiful bracelets and rings. With statement necklaces giving way to higher necklines in many cases, the overall effect was, not surprisingly, more refined and conservative than the VMAs – as if the primetime TV stars were borrowing from their big-screen counterparts.

Red Carpet Jewelry Highlights

The Emmys Red Carpet was not without its share of new jewelry designer names. Lead Actress nominee Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey) wore angular gold pieces with subtle diamonds and grey pearls by Brazilian designer Ana Khouri. Her thin, yellow gold bracelets were strategically placed to create the look of empty space, a trend that E! host Giuliana Rancic also adopted in her jewels on loan from Forevermark.

Dockery was one of several stars to don a tiara. Hers was of yellow gold in a wavy style. Hayden Panettiere (Nashville) wore a diamond headband to match her gorgeous Fred Leighton diamond earrings and rings.

Best Supporting Actress nominee Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) was one of many stars to choose a red gown for the Emmy Awards Red Carpet. Taking her cue from gold detail at the waist, she accessorized her dress with mix of bold gold and gemstones by Neil Lane.

Taylor Schilling, Emmy Award nominee for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Orange is the New Black), wore diamond ear climbers by Forevermark. The night before, at the VMAs, she favored the same style.
