Jewelry trends come and go, but the classic locket is here to stay. Whether it’s new or vintage, a locket helps you tell your personal story…and keeps it close to your heart.

After the spring jewelry trade shows in Las Vegas, the press reported that silver and gold lockets are more popular today than they have been in decades. Perhaps that’s because we’re all searching for ways to protect our individuality this age of oversharing. In addition, many of us are looking for authentic, heirloom-worthy jewelry pieces we can call our own and pass down to our children.

Fine Jewelry designer Monica Rich Kosann has been widely credited with putting the locket back on our must-have jewelry lists. She calls her line of collectible lockets “heirlooms for our generation,” and her beautiful Instagram feed attests to her sense of family and tradition.

Not coincidentally, Kosann is also a professional photographer, so she understands the value of the locket as a precious photo keepsake. “In essence, each woman who wears our pieces is her own storyteller,” says Kosann on her website. Her popular sterling silver and 18K gold lockets range from under $300 to several thousand dollars.

Layer Your Lockets

In addition to sentiment, there are solid fashion reasons for adding a locket to your jewelry wardrobe (and remember, you don’t have to spend a lot to make a big impression). Whether it’s real or costume, a locket can serve as the “anchor” or focal point for your layered-look necklace collection. Try layering your lockets with charms, talismans and found objects. Dress them up with gold and silver chains, or down with cords and ribbons, Boho style. And don’t be afraid to mix new and old, silver and gold for an eclectic style that says, “I’ve collected these over time.”

One accessories editor we know at OBJ wears her 14K gold locket every day; a gift from her sister, it holds tiny photos of their late father and brother. “You’d be surprised how many people ask me the personal question, ‘What’s in your locket?’”, she told us recently. “People are just naturally curious about what is hidden inside a locket, but revealing your story is entirely up to you.”
