Looking for a special piece of sapphire jewelry to celebrate your birthday this month? If you have, say, $5,000 to $7,000 to spend, you could take home a sapphire, diamond and ruby American flag ring once owned by former First Lady Nancy Reagan. The Private Collection of President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan will be up for auction on September 21 and 22 at Christie’s New York.
Mrs. Reagan, who died in March at the age of 94, was considered one of the most stylish First Ladies of the 20th century. Estimates for her jewelry collection range from $1,000 to $50,000, and Christie’s reports the event could bring in at least $2 million.
Proceeds from the sale, which includes furniture and personal items, will go to The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institution.
American Flag Ring by Bulgari
“Mrs. Reagan’s jewelry is, above everything else, very classic,” said Tom Burstein, senior vice president of jewelry at Christie’s, in an interview with CNN. A case in point is her iconic sapphire, diamond and ruby American flag ring designed by Bulgari. She wore it on July 4, 1986, to an event in celebration of the restoration of the Statue of Liberty.
Burstein expects the Bulgari ring to be one of the most popular pieces of the sale. “It’s a beautiful ring that is drawing the most attention so far; it will be the highlight,” he told CNN.
Lion Set by Van Cleef & Arpels
The most expensive lots in the auction (said to be Mrs. Regan’s favorites) are a diamond and gold lion pendant-brooch necklace and matching earrings designed by Van Cleef & Arpels.
The versatile necklace, which can be converted into four bracelets, is estimated at $30,000 to $50,000. The matching earrings are estimated at $15,000 to $20,000.
Pearl and Diamond Earrings
Among the most affordable pieces in the Reagan collection are pearl and diamond earrings estimated at $1,000 to $1,500, a reasonable price for estate jewelry with such a uniquely American provenance.
OBJ predicts that Mrs. Reagan’s jewels will sell for several multiples above their estimated value.
