Pantone, the “global authority on color” company, last week announced that Radiant Orchid is the 2014 Color of the Year. “An enigmatic purple with rosy undertones…an enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink…”, Radiant Orchid, according to the Pantone press release, is expected to have a major influence in the coming year on everything from fashions and jewelry to cosmetics and home décor. But truth be told, the pinkish-purple hue has long been a favorite of jewelry designers and collectors of colored gemstones and diamonds. The jewelry industry prides itself on staying ahead of the popular color curve, setting its own trends by selecting precious gems in new variations and unusual color
combinations.

Pinks and orchid colors ruled the runways during the Spring 2014 couture and ready-to-wear shows and they will no doubt continue to bloom in profusion in the seasons ahead. The vibrant hues are already popping up on the red carpet in couture gowns and jewels from the finest jewelry houses. Top fashion designers including Thakoon, Victoria Beckham and Monique Lhuillier showcased pinky-purples in their spring and resort collections. Fancy pinkish-purple (and purplish-pink) diamonds are among those that have been breaking world records recently at premiere auction houses around the world.

Radiant Orchid, or #18-3224 on the Pantone color fan deck, is a return to the tropical shades selected by the company in recent years, such as Tangerine Tango, Honeysuckle, Turquoise, and Mimosa. Pantone’s 2013 choice – Emerald – is a natural complement to Radiant Orchid, its opposite on the color wheel; imagine luminescent emeralds paired with the pinkish-purple diamonds or sapphires. Luscious.
