Today, our Red Carpet Roundup features jewelry at the Cannes Film Festival, an event that began as a cozy in-crowd gathering of movie stars in 1946 and grew to become an international extravaganza of film and fashion glitterati, celebrities and paparazzi — a force to be reckoned with for stars and their stylists.
At the annual two-week movie fest, where they actually do screen dozens of films and hand out numerous awards, the real action takes place at La Croisette. Here, on the waterfront promenade in Cannes, thousands of journalists, photographers and fans gather to spot superstars climbing the red-carpeted stairs in couture gowns and magnificent jewels.
The Power of the Red Carpet
“It’s really important because it’s another runway. It’s as simple as that,” said Francois-Henri Pinault, CEO of the luxury brand conglomerate Kering and a first-time sponsor of the Cannes Film Festival. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pinault, who is married to actress Salma Hayek, said: “Celebrities are the desirable people. People dream through the movies, and these amazing stars are wearing our creations.”
Chopard: A Long Liaison
This is a lesson Chopard learned long ago. The Swiss watch and jewelry brand is Official Partner of the Festival de Cannes for the 18th time this year. Not only has Cannes provided Chopard with an invaluable showcase for its collections, Chopard contributes to the event by creating the Palme d’Or, the Minis Palmes, the Caméra d’Or and the Trophée Chopard, which awards young actors.
The Palme d’Or Award, hand-crafted by Chopard since 1998, is celebrating its 60th birthday this year.
Here are a few of our favorite pieces of jewelry at the Cannes Film Festival. The celebration continues through May 24, 2015.
