All throughout the ages pearls have been known for their beautiful warm glow and shimmering iridescence.  Pearls were the prized possession among nobility because of their rarity and beauty.  Thanks to the remake of the “The Great Gatsby” movie the roaring 20’s fashion is coming back into style, which makes it the ideal time to whip out those beauties again.  While wearing pearls is quite the classic fashion statement, protecting the delicate outer layer of the pearl, the nacre, is of utmost importance.

Put your pearls on as one of the last things you do when you’re getting ready to go out.  Makeup, lotions, perfumes or hairsprays can coat the pearl and give it a dull appearance.  However, the good news is the more you wear your pearls the more the natural oils on your skin will enhance the pearls’ luster. Never use harsh chemicals such as ammonia to clean your pearls; it will strip the nacre leaving you with a dull pearl.

The best way to care for pearls is to use Connoisseurs Delicate Jewelry Cleaner.  It’s a mild detergent made for cleaning pearls and other delicate gems.  Dip a soft cotton cloth in the cleaner and gently rub the pearls.  You can also dip the entire strand of pearls in the container of cleaner; however you will need to make sure they dry completely before wearing them to ensure the silk string does not stretch. Place them on a dry clean cloth and let air dry overnight.  When you’re done wearing your pearls store them separately to avoid them from getting scratched.
