Critics agree: Broadway’s annual Tony Awards show has never been considered particularly Red Carpet-worthy. Until Sunday night, June 7, that is. In an attempt to inject much-needed glamour to the Great White Way awards, the Tony committee this year called upon Anna Wintour of Vogue, who happens to be a passionate theater-goer. She in turn tapped her marquee-name designer pals and persuaded them, for the first time, to lend their runway designs to the Tony Awards presenters and nominees. The difference was dazzling.

And what about jewelry at the 2015 Tony Awards? Well, where couture dresses dare to tread high jewelry usually follows. As if bowing to the Broadway debut of the big-name gowns, however, participating stylists kept their jewelry choices somewhat subdued. Few statement necklaces or matching suites of designer jewels were in evidence, but what did make it to the carpet was of the highest caliber and in the best of taste.

Here are a few OBJ Best Dressed/Best Jewelry nominations from the 69th Annual Tony Awards in New York:

Dame Helen Mirren won her first Tony, capturing Best Actress in a Play for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in “The Audience.”  Mirren’s dress is by Badgley Mischka, her jewelry is from Fred Leighton.

Designer Zac Posen had a big night, dressing Tony Awards co-host Kristen Chenoweth and presenter Bernadette Peters, among others. Peters’ earrings are multi-colored gemstone drops by David Webb.

Jennifer Lopez debuted an elegant new look: a simple pageboy hairdo, a Valentino Haute Couture ball gown, and Harry Winston jewels.

Anna Chlumsky, of “You Can’t Take It With You,” chose diamond pagoda-style earrings with her wine and black leather Sophie Theallet design. She presented with Debra Messing, who wore a similar dress.

In another first, a Tony Awards preshow was live-streamed on CBS.com and TonyAwards.com on June 7, co-hosted by actors Darren Criss and Sierra Boggess. Refreshingly, not all Red Carpet walkers were asked, “Who are you wearing?” Instead, the interviewers concentrated on the actors’ Broadway credentials.

It was interesting to note how many working actors had gathered for the 10 a.m. Tony Awards show rehearsal, left to perform in their respective Sunday matinees, and then returned at 6-ish to walk the Red Carpet and perform or present at the live Tony Awards show that night. Hard-working actors indeed!
