As we prepare for the nation’s 237th birthday, it seems appropriate to reflect on a classic American jewelry look – “red, white and blue” and patriotic jewelry. Jewels and enameled pieces in the all-American color combination, as well as vintage jewelry depicting American flags, eagles and other Americana, are highly sought-after by the most sophisticated collectors and connoisseurs. These pieces often come up at important estate sales at the country’s premiere auction houses, including Christie’s and Sotheby’s. But if that’s not your shopping style you can still get your RW&B on — at jewelry stores, department stores and online jewelry resources.
Whether you’re looking for fine or costume jewelry, red, white and blue stones always work well together. White diamonds or pearls mixed with sapphires and rubies — real or faux – is a classic combination that will never go out of fashion. Bulgari’s lapis lazuli, coral and diamond vintage bracelet (a variation on the tri-color theme) fetched $21,000 at Sotheby’s two years ago…while Overstock.com’s “created ruby, white and blue sapphire” ring set is available today for just under $70!
Perhaps the most popular of all patriotic jewelry is the American flag lapel pin, a bipartisan symbol of our national pride. Former U.N. ambassador and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright is a collector of Old Glory pins of all sizes, as well as other pin styles depicting symbols of patriotism and power. Throughout her career in public service Albright famously used her pins to send subtle signals during diplomatic meetings. Her book, Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat’s Jewel Box (HarperCollins), includes dozens of photos of her fascinating brooches.
Happy Independence Day to one and all…and here’s to a fabulous 4th from all your friends at Obsessed by Jewelry. We’re busy hunting through our own jewelry boxes for a little something red, white and blue.
How about you?
