Congratulations…you’ve made it to Memorial Day Weekend! It’s finally that time of year when we can kick off our stilettos and run barefoot through the sand.
But what will we wear? For those of us who work for a living (and who doesn’t, really?), it takes a little forethought to select and pack the outfits and summer jewelry to transform our looks from work-wise to weekend. Here are a few tips about what to pack on Friday when you won’t be home ‘til Monday:
Dress for Success
If your office doesn’t celebrate Casual Fridays, wear a Little Black Dress or grey sheath on getaway day and pair it with a tailored blazer for a pulled-together look. Then add a chain-link choker or chunky pearls and simple stud earrings. At 5 o’clock, presto change-o, you can wear the blazer over a striped T-shirt and white denim jeans (a big summer trend). Throw on a casual tassel necklace, replace the ladylike studs with hoops, and you’re good to go. On Monday morning wear the dress again, this time with a scarf and a contrasting cardigan, and return to your more conservative jewelry.
As the nursery rhyme says, “Saturday’s child works hard for a living,” so live it up at the beach and don’t forget your jewelry. Gold chains, bangles and hoops look terrific with your bathing suits. In fact, your bikini can look downright Plain Jane without some sparkle. Spoiler alert: Avoid wearing your good jewelry for a dip in the pool or ocean unless you’re very sure of the fit of your rings and the strength of your clasps.
Like a Natural Woman
Go ahead…layer on the raffia, hemp, wood and shell jewelry this summer. After all, if you can’t embrace these natural elements on the weekend, when can you? Try this trend out on a workday, too, but select just one piece. A thick wooden bracelet makes a powerful statement with a tailored white shirt, belted cardi and your go-to-meeting trousers.
Don’t forget to pack your boldest bijoux if you plan to go out to a club or restaurant. A big bejeweled necklace and long chandelier earrings will transform your LBD, or even your jeans and a peasant blouse. OBJ believes jewelry that moves when you’re dancing will never go out of style. And here’s a news flash: Neon jewelry is back. Did you see Selena Gomez at the Billboard Music Awards? She rocked a white Atelier Versace gown with neon accents à la Studio 54.
This summer, let’s all work hard and play harder. Who could ask for anything more?
