Floral jewelry designs, or those inspired by Mother Nature, are as old as the art of jewelry itself. Pieces incorporating flowers, petals, leaves and vines crop up every spring…but this season they seem to be trending like never before. The rise of the “statement necklace” may have something to do with this surge in flower power. Whether bold and dramatic, or layered and delicate, bejeweled flowers in profusion simply cannot be ignored. Everyone from the red carpet regular to your local TV anchor is adding something “big and botanical” to her spring/summer jewelry wardrobe. You should too!
A Rose is a Rose
Many fine jewelry designers have been inspired by the spring collections from Europe, which this year featured distinctive fabrics splashed with roses, poppies, and camellias. Other storied jewelry houses have long been associated with their founders’ favorite flowers. Chanel, for instance, incorporates Coco Chanel’s favorite flower – the camellia – into virtually every one of its fashion and jewelry collections. The House of Dior is known by its symbol, the rose, which was Monsieur Dior’s favorite bloom.
Look for new floral pieces at better department stores, jewelry salons, and on curated jewelry websites like JewelMint or Stone & Strand. And consider vintage floral designs — especially popular in the ‘50s and ‘60s — available on 1stdibs and Ruby Lane or in resale shops near you.
Even if you don’t think you’re the floral type, step out of your comfort zone and try a bejeweled flower brooch on a jacket collar, or a multi-flowered necklace on a solid-color dress. You’ll be surprised by what this little touch of romanticism can do to put some spring in your step.
Think floral prints with floral jewels is a bit too much? You could be right. Try picking a botanical-shaped piece that highlights just one color from your summer print…and mix it with your pearls to cool things down.
The important thing is to have fun with the flower power look. Summer’s right around the corner, and at OBJ we just can’t help it — beautiful floral jewelry is in our nature!
