Today is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day…and I plan to celebrate by buying a beautiful piece of geode jewelry wrapped in 18k gold. Geodes are naturally formed hollow rocks lined in colorful crystals; when “sliced” and set as jewelry they result in one-of-a-kind wearable art.
I don’t know about you, but I wish I’d saved those geodes I collected as a kid (or paid more attention in Earth Science class). Authentic geode jewelry is more popular today than ever before, especially, it seems, among the celebrity set.
Kimberly McDonald Designs
Perhaps the geode jewelry craze has something to do with First Lady Michelle Obama. When she was photographed in 2011 rocking one-of-a-kind black geode earrings by New York designer Kimberly McDonald, a media firestorm ensued. The coverage was a huge boost for McDonald’s jewelry business; she now counts Jennifer Aniston, Kelly Osbourne and Miranda Lambert among her loyal celebrity fans.
McDonald, a North Carolina native, has created an entire collection using natural and organic materials such as geodes and agates, highlighted by natural/untreated fine materials including diamonds, raw emeralds and baroque pearls.
Her commitment to honoring nature is underscored by her use of reclaimed gold and wood, and recycled diamonds and other precious stones:
“I like to think of each creation as an extension of what nature has given us,” says McDonald on her website. “…We also strive to reuse rather than reap. Jewelry was initially created to carry symbolic talismans and stones of energy or import. I believe it should still have that meaning and that we can accomplish this without pillaging nature.”
You can find Kimberly McDonald geode jewelry designs at Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus. Starting at $9,000, her unique pieces are the ultimate tribute to Mother Nature!
