Who doesn’t love Cate Blanchett? The Oscar-winning Aussie who stars in Woody Allen’s new film, Blue Jasmine, is not only a brilliant actress, she’s a contemporary style icon on and off the screen. In Blanchett’s latest role she plays a New York socialite who loses her wealth and status when her mogul husband — played by Alec Baldwin — is found guilty of running a Ponzi scheme. It’s all about Jasmine’s fall from grace…but for those of us at OBJ, it’s also about her fabulous clothes and jewelry.

Blanchett is said to have drawn inspiration for her character’s look by observing women married — or once married — to high-rolling financiers (remember Bernie and Ruth Madoff?). In the film the 5’9”, sample-size Blanchett is dressed in Karl Lagerfeld, Ferretti, Hermès, Fendi and Ralph Lauren. She is reported to have had a significant role in selecting the clothes and jewels her character wears.

“We had a blast at Fred Leighton,” costume designer Suzy Benzinger told Allure magazine about her trip with Blanchett to choose the jewelry for the movie. “The bracelet her husband gives her in the film is diamonds set in platinum. That was around $250,000…And we had a field day with wonderful period jewelry.”

The jewelry in Blue Jasmine is for the most part understated, including real pearls, chunky gold bracelets and conservative (but important) diamond drop earrings. Jasmine’s world may be falling apart at the seams (her faithful Chanel jacket gets quite a workout), but throughout her long cinematic meltdown she is almost never without her “good jewelry.”

Offstage, the 44-year-old Blanchett has been wowing on the Red Carpet in recent years. Credit must be given to her longtime stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, who has everything to do with Blanchett’s sleek and super-chic appeal. Cate’s most daring Red Carpet turnout to date is the beaded lavender Givenchy ensemble she wore to the 2011 Academy Awards. Our friends at Brides.com can show you how to get her accompanying yellow and white diamond earrings look for less at:

So what will Blanchett wear to the Academy Awards on March 2, 2014? Not even her stylist knows for sure. But one thing is certain – Cate’s a shoo-in to be nominated in the Best Actress category.

Look for Cate Blanchett to continue to set fashion and jewelry trends on the Red Carpet…and at a theater near you. And keep an ear tuned to the Oscar buzz that is already growing around Blue Jasmine and its star, Cate the Great.
