Every year at the Cannes Film Festival in the south of France, international movie studios throw spectacular parties to promote their films’ premieres. Megawatt superstars from around the globe walk the red carpet in borrowed haute couture gowns and designer tuxedos. And some of the world’s most revered jewelry houses adorn these stars with their finest gems – one, Chopard, as an official partner of the 10-day event. For people like us (obsessed by jewelry), the films, the stars, and the gowns are important, but it’s the jewelry that steals the show in Cannes. Here are just a few of the dazzling highlights from the 67th Cannes Film Festival (May 14 to 25, 2014).
Jennifer Lawrence, arguably the most bankable female film star today, attended the festival to promote international distribution of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part I.” She wore a layered blue and black Dior tank dress with drop emerald earrings by Irene Neuwirth.
Another American film, “Foxcatcher,” got a 10-minute standing ovation at its premiere before a Monday night crowd. The film’s star Jessica Chastain arrived on the red carpet in a custom black Givenchy Couture strapless gown with an eye-popping diamond leaf necklace by Tesiro.
In Marion Cotillard’s new movie “Deux Jours, Une Nuit,” she plays a factory worker, but she came to the film’s news conference in a jewel-encrusted minidress!
Blake Lively was the darling of the paparazzi in Cannes. In France to support husband Ryan Reynolds’ film “The Captive,” she stunned in several Gucci gowns, Lorraine Schwartz jewels, and simple but lovely braided hair.
Swiss jewelry maker Chopard — an official partner of the Cannes Film Festival — held its first of several events on May 15 in conjunction with Variety. Cate Blanchett posed in diamond-encrusted crustacean earrings from Chopard’s new Animal World Collection. Model Petra Nemcova chose an exquisite diamond butterfly.
