Earlier this year, the award-winning British jewelry designer Polly Wales moved her core team of artisan wax-workers and goldsmiths to a new headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. It was not a moment too soon. Up until the move, some 40 U.S. retailers (or stockists, as they say in the U.K.) carried Wales’s one-of-a-kind “rough luxe” pieces. Now, with her stateside expansion, Wales is poised to build her brand more broadly throughout the U.S., and around the globe.
A Cult Following
“We having been building our brand in the U.S. slowly for the last nine years,” Wales told National Jeweler. “We have had a small cult following but in the last three years we have really grown, mostly in the U.S, where, as I see it, jewelry and craftsmanship is really held in high regard. People have an awareness of fine jewelry, and it’s an exciting thing to be part of that.”
Since starting her company in 2006, the young jewelry designer has gained international acclaim for her natural, “from-the-earth” aesthetic. Inspired by ancient treasures, traditional ethnic adornments and modern approaches to color, Wales’s contemporary jewelry features precious gems and ethically-sourced diamonds cast directly into 18K gold.
According to her website, Wales prides herself on hand-crafting luxury jewelry that is refreshingly wearable and versatile, giving women the choice between subtle ornamentation or layering and stacking pieces into bolder statement styles.” Her rustic-luxury designs are especially appealing to engagement ring shoppers looking to repurpose inherited stones in more modern settings.
Where to Find It
Wales’s new 2,500-square-foot L.A. space houses a workshop and in-house casting facility, as well as a wholesale showroom, design studio and bespoke consultation service where customers can commission wedding, engagement or modern heirloom pieces.
